History & Biography
Known worldwide as the "Golden Boy of SEC," Rufus ShinRa appears to be your garden variety spoiled rich kid. He grew up in the lap of luxury and wanted for nothing in way of material desires. He went to only the best private boarding schools and was given the finest education money could buy. Ever since reaching his teenage years, Rufus has been under constant grooming to follow in his father's footsteps.
It's something that he's resented for most of his young adult life.
This is not to say that Rufus has no desire to become the next head of SEC. Quite the contrary. The heir to the ShinRa Empire looks forward to the day when he can take the control of the company and have all that power in his hands. What he resents, however, is the fact that his father has had such a stranglehold on various events in his life that he hasn't had a chance to truly live the way he has wanted to. Not only that, but over the years whenever Rufus did manage to attain distinctions and achievements on his own, his father was either too busy with his company to acknowledge his son's hard work, or would flat out tear it down by pointing out everything that wasn't done perfectly.
Because of this, Rufus has developed a stubborn obsessive-compulsive perfectionist streak. He cannot stand disorder or chaos in his daily life. If something is out of place, it will nag at him until he gives in and fixes it. When working in the office, he is just as anal retentive about his schedules. He hates it when people are late to meetings or appointments. He hates it even more if that person's initial lateness throws off the rest of his day completely. However, despite how much it irritates the hell out of him, he will strive to keep his displeasure from outwardly flaring as much as possible.
Actually, he strives to keep any and all sign of emotions, good or bad, from showing if he can help it. Since he's still young, though, if enough buttons are pressed by just the right people, he will snap and lash out in a sudden unexpected verbal outburst at the one pressing them. His interactions with Rikku, however, have been helping to temper his coldness and issues with human contact towards most people.
There are only a few beings in the world right now who, if in private, Rufus will lower his guards around and actually show the semblance of healthy human emotions and expression. The first being is his mother, Claudia Renoir. The second his pet black panther Dark Nation, which was one of his mother's last gifts to him. Tseng, the man who practically raised Rufus and is fornerly his lover, is third. Then there is Rikku, who in the face of him losing Tseng and her losing Gippal has become his fiancee for real this time. There is Sephiroth, though his feelings toward the General is more akin to hero-worship and professional respect than emotional attachment. He's also slowly, but surely developing trust in Leo. He's also got a tendency to show emotion around Celes as well, though the emotion is usually annoyance since he never wanted to have an older sister in the first place. Still... On some level deep, DEEP down I'm certain that, since she is his mother's daughter, he cares about her.
Claudia was married to President Shinra for ten years, but divorced him six years after Rufus was born. Unfortunately, in the divorce proceedings, because of his lawyers, he was the one who got primary custody of Rufus and she only got certain holidays and short visits for a few days every month. Rufus and Claudia lived for those short visits every month. In the mean time between them, Claudia went back to work as a research specialist in ShinRa's scientific department, specializing in gene splicing, and Rufus ended up getting shipped to boarding schools most of the time. Just last year there is a mysterious accident at the lab she's working at, and Claudia ends up in Mideel with acute mako poisoning and is totally catatonic. However, no one will tell Rufus how it happened.
Sensing a cover-up, Rufus is about to launch his own investigation when his father approaches him, offering him the position of vice-president of SEC. Suspicious, but not in a position to refuse the offer, the now 21 year old man accepts, thinking he could use his new rank in the company to get the answers he's looking for. Unfortunately, being made VP backfires on Rufus. Completely under his father's thumb, Rufus is kept loaded down with so much work he doesn't have time to run the investigation into his mother's accident, though the work he does is always well done. This has made him an extremely bitter individual towards not only his father, but Hojo and the other members of the SEC boardroom. As long as the company is under his father's control, Rufus refuses to put any measurable amount of trust in anyone on President ShinRa's payroll...
...Save for three individuals. Rufus he feels that he can trust General Sephiroth. He will often go to the general for advice if he has come to a situation that he cannot work through on his own. The young man does tend to hero-worship Sephiroth, though he'll never admit that even to his conscious thoughts. In a way, Sephiroth has become a psuedo-father-figure for Rufus in recent years.
The other is the leader of the TURKS, Tseng. Tseng was Rufus's primary bodyguard while he was younger after his parents divorced, so he was there for the young man for most of his life. Tseng became close to both the boy and his mother in this time and was affected just as much as Rufus was by the sudden illness of Claudia. Because he is the only person that Rufus feels who's been there for him for as long as he can remember, the young man has developed a serious emotional attachment to Tseng.
Lastly, there is Rikku, who is a special case all in her own. Originally saddled with her as his personal assistant at his father's request, he was later forced to be engaged to her. Though they would fight and be at each others' throats at first, they've grown on each other somewhat and now have a brother/sister type of relationship. Rufus cares more about Rikku than he's willing to admit to others or himself.
He is working on putting more trust in his TURKS as a whole, but the actions of several individuals keep serving to put doubt of their skills in his mind.
